The 18th Africa Leather Value Chain Forum 2025 which took place between 26 – 28 November 2025 at Zambia sent a strong message that the continent is ready to grow its leather sector fast but only if everyone works together.
Leaders from governments, SMEs, tanners, designers, financiers and regional bodies agreed that Africa must focus on modern technology, strong SME clusters, better design capabilities, traceability, sustainability and lower logistics costs inside Africa.
High transport costs continue to slow down trade between African nations.
Delegates also pushed for wider use of PAPSS and the COMESA Clearing House. These systems can make cross border payments easier which will help the AfCFTA become a real driver of trade.
The forum praised the role of Africa Leather and Leather Products Institute (ALLPI) which is working as the continent’s ecosystem builder.
ALLPI is helping develop incubation centres, eco tanning, design innovation plus more investment ready projects.
These include shared machinery spaces, finance models for SMEs, industrial parks, tracking systems and logistics hubs.
The next step is a voluntary partnership where AUC DTIM, AfCFTA Secretariat, RECs, DFIs, standards agencies, universities and private industry move forward as one.
Africa now has momentum. The goal is clear. Build a competitive sustainable leather sector where products are proudly Made in Africa.
