Brazil’s export market for vegetable tanning extracts has faced a tough year in 2024, continuing its downward trend for the eighth consecutive year. Exports of these products, which include tanning extracts of vegetable origin, tannins, and their salts or derivatives, fell by 18% to 13,000 tons.
Over the years, Brazil’s vegetable tanning extract exports have seen a steady decline. The most notable growth occurred back in 2016, when exports increased by 18% peaking at 34,000 tons. However, since that high point, the sector has struggled to regain its momentum.
In 2024, export volumes fell to just 13,000 tons, which highlights a worrying trend for businesses in this industry. The contraction signals both internal challenges and external pressures affecting Brazil’s standing as a major exporter of vegetable tanning extracts.
In 2024, the vegetable tanning extracts price stood at USD 2,138 per ton (FOB, Brazil), falling by -5.8% against the previous year.
According to Indexbox. The value of vegetable tanning extract exports dropped sharply to $28 million in 2024, a far cry from the $55 million peak achieved in 2016. This represents a 23% drop in value.
The sharp decrease in export revenue has sparked concerns over the industry’s ability to compete in the global market. Companies now face the task of reassessing strategies to navigate these difficult times and find ways to improve competitiveness.
