Brazil’s leather industry closed 2024 on a high note, marking a significant rise in exports and setting new benchmarks in sustainability and innovation. Total leather exports reached $1.26 billion, reflecting a 12.5% increase compared to 2023. Even more impressive, the volume of exports grew by 22.3% in square meters and 38.8% in weight (tons).
This growth was powered by strategic efforts from Brazilian Leather, a collaborative project by the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil).
According to José Fernando Bello, Executive President of CICB, the progress in 2024 goes beyond impressive export numbers. Bello emphasized advancements in the leather value chain that will drive future success. Key achievements include:
- Launch of the CICB Raw Material Guide, offering a step-by-step approach for traceable raw material sourcing in Brazil.
- Implementation of the National Plan for Individual Identification of Cattle and Buffaloes by the Federal Government, enhancing traceability.
- Vietnam lifted the sanitary certificate requirement for Brazilian wet blue leather, streamlining exports to the region.
“We worked relentlessly on compliance, traceability, and overcoming customs barriers. These efforts have positioned Brazil’s leather sector for sustained success”
José Fernando Bello, Executive President of CICB
Brazil’s leather exports in 2024 saw significant growth across diverse global markets, showcasing successful market diversification strategies. Notable increases include:
- Vietnam: Exports increased by 69.8% in value, making it Brazil’s fourth-largest leather importer.
- Mexico: Experienced a 26.3% increase, now ranking as the fifth-largest destination for Brazilian leather.
- China: Brazil’s largest market, grew by 26.9% in value, or 20.8% when including Hong Kong.
This global expansion reflects Brazil’s growing appeal in international markets and its ability to adapt to evolving global demands.
Looking ahead, Brazil’s leather industry is doubling down on sustainable practices and innovative technologies. Bello stressed the importance of staying ahead of market trends, particularly in areas like Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), which are becoming increasingly vital to global clients.
To reinforce this commitment, CICB will host the CICB Sustainability Forum on March 19, 2025, during Fimec. The forum will center on the theme: “Life Cycle Assessment in the Leather Industry,” highlighting sustainable innovations shaping the future of leather manufacturing.
