Chanel owned Bodin-Joyeux tannery has announced plans to build a new tannery in Levroux, Indre in France to expand and modernize its operations. The move stands out because no new tannery has been built in the country for at least 50 years, making it important for the leather industry.
Bodin-Joyeux, a Chanel-owned tannery acquired in 2013, operates in the leather industry and specialises in lambskins. The company currently runs from two sites in the city centre, which limits its ability to expand and scale production.
The new facility will be set up in Bel Air and will allow the company to upgrade its production systems, increase output and improve efficiency. It will also help streamline work processes, provide better working conditions for employees and reduce environmental impact.

The tannery, founded in 1860, currently employs around 100 people and produces 500,000 skins every year and it generated a revenue of €21 million in 2023, according to local media reports. With space constraints holding back expansion, this new development is expected to unlock future growth.
