China Tanning Sector Revenue and Leather Imports Decline in First 10 Months of 2025

According to official data released by the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) China’s tanning industry remained under pressure in the first 10 months of 2025 with revenue showing a clear decline.

From January to October 2025 key tanneries in China reported total sales revenue of 43 billion RMB. This reflects a year on year drop of 10.4%

Imports of raw hides and skins also moved lower.

China imported 1.174 million tons valued at USD 930 million during this period. This marks a decline of 4.3% in volume and 16.4% in value compared to last year.

Semi finished leather imports stood at 487,000 tons from Jan to Oct 2025. Volumes fell by 5.7% while the import value dropped to USD 710 million down 17.1% year on year.

Finished leather imports recorded one of the sharpest declines. China imported 30,000 tons valued at USD 470 million. This represents a fall of 15.6% in quantity and 16.5% in value compared to the same period last year.
