Chinese Investments Ready to Establish Tannery and Wool Factory in Tajikistan

A major Chinese enterprise is planning a significant investment in the Khatlon region of Tajikistan. This investment centers on the construction of a leather tannery, with construction potentially beginning as early as June, pending the completion of the necessary bureaucratic processes for the designated land. Last year, Khatlon produced over 1.1 million hides from cattle and smaller livestock.

The Chinese company, Fuxin Xinyida Agriculture & Industry Trade Company, intends to build a tannery in Tajikistan. Additionally, they plan to establish a wool production factory. Both facilities would capitalize on the region’s abundant livestock resources.

This announcement followed a visit to the region by the company’s CEO, Gao Jong Tao, who communicated the plans to the regional governor, Davlatali Said. During their meeting, they discussed the bilateral relations of the province, the involvement of Chinese enterprises, and the operation of Tajik-Chinese joint ventures in the area.

The construction of the new tannery could commence as early as June. This initiative aims to maximize the utilization of local livestock resources.

The investment from Fuxin Xinyida is set to have a transformative impact on the local economy. The leather tannery and wool factory are expected to create numerous job opportunities, boosting employment in the region.

This is particularly important in Khatlon, where economic development has been slower compared to other regions in Tajikistan. By leveraging the local livestock industry, these new facilities will not only process hides and wool more efficiently but also enhance the overall value chain, benefiting local farmers and the broader community.

The Khatlon region holds strategic importance for both Tajikistan and China. For Tajikistan, it represents a key area for agricultural and industrial development. For China, it is an important location within the broader context of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

The BRI aims to enhance global trade and stimulate economic growth across Asia and beyond, and investments like this are a critical component of that strategy. By investing in Khatlon, China not only strengthens its economic ties with Tajikistan but also secures a foothold in a region that is pivotal for trade routes and regional stability.
