Dofin S A One of Uruguay’s Largest Tanneries Declares Voluntary Bankruptcy After 40 Years

After more than 40 years in operation, Dofin S. A., one of Uruguay’s largest tanneries, has filed for voluntary bankruptcy, reports Montevideo Portal.

The judicial system appointed the Liga de Defensa Sindical Lideco as trustee who immediately informed suppliers about the company’s situation.

A supplier who has worked with Dofin since 1994 told that his last sale in 2022, worth $2700, has never been paid.

Meanwhile clients learned about the trustee’s appointment on November 24, 2025 after repeated attempts to get Dofin to settle outstanding invoices.

On November 3, the court declared Dofin in voluntary bankruptcy and ordered a provisional moratorium, liquidation of assets and the removal of its administrators.

Lideco said a Creditors’ Meeting will be held on May 5 2026 and all creditors must submit original documents to verify their claims by February 9 2026.

Founded in the mid-1980s, Dofin began by storing salted wool and sheepskins. In the early 1990s it expanded into bovine hides focusing on Wet Blue exports to Europe Asia and the US.

Technological upgrades later allowed production of Wet Blue Splits and Crust. From 2013 to 2017 the company made chrome-free leather for the automotive industry and later expanded to supply footwear and leather goods markets.

The voluntary bankruptcy marks a dramatic turn for a company that spent decades building international markets. Creditors now wait to see how the liquidation process unfolds and whether outstanding debts will be recovered.
