Fire Breaks Out in Jajmau Tannery

A fire broke out at a leather tannery in the Wajidpur area of Jajmau, Kanpur, on Thursday 15th May, 2025 morning. While there were no injuries, the blaze caused heavy damage to machinery and raw materials inside the factory.

The incident happened around 11 a.m. A sudden short circuit is believed to have sparked the fire, which quickly spread due to combustible materials stored nearby. The tannery is owned by Kashif Lari, a resident of Defence Colony.

Workers tried to control the flames and immediately informed the fire department. A fire tender reached the spot without delay and managed to put out the fire before it could spread further.

“If there was a delay, the flames could have reached chemicals and other flammable materials stored on the ground floor of the tannery, potentially causing a large explosion and significant loss of life and property”

Deepak Sharma, Chief Fire Officer

The fire caused brief panic in the surrounding area, but the situation was quickly brought under control by the fire department.

The police and fire officials are now investigating the exact cause of the fire. The factory owner has promised to fully cooperate with the investigation.

In response, the Kanpur Municipal Corporation has announced that all tanneries in the Jajmau area will undergo safety audits. Operations at the affected tannery will remain shut until it gets safety clearance from authorities.
