The International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies (IULTCS) has officially begun a new chapter with Geoff Holmes stepping in as President for the 2026-2027 term
Geoff Holmes is currently the Director at New Zealand Leather and Shoe Research Association (LASRA)
In his incoming message Holmes called the role both an honour and a serious responsibility. He said the union represents leather science technology and chemistry from across the world and depends heavily on the strength of its national member societies.
Holmes stressed that education science publications communication and promotion of the leather industry remain the backbone of IULTCS.
He said active national participation is what keeps the global body relevant and credible.
He also thanked the outgoing President Dr Joan Carles Castell for his leadership and long term impact. Castell’s work with ISO and CEN leather standardisation was highlighted as a key contribution that will shape the industry for years.

Holmes welcomed Dr Giancarlo Lovato as the new Vice President and pointed to renewed engagement with international standardisation bodies as a priority for the new leadership.
He also recognised the role of Dr Luis A Zugno along with the Executive Committee Assembly representatives and Commission Chairs. He said strong governance and scientific credibility come from their behind the scenes work.
Looking ahead Holmes made it clear that his presidency will encourage open debate and honest questioning. He said progress in leather science has always come from challenging assumptions and pushing boundaries.
The new President concluded by saying that sincerity effort and openness will guide his term as he works to keep IULTCS a trusted forward looking global voice for leather science.
