The Italian leather industry is mourning the passing of one of its most influential pioneers. Bruno Mastrotto, a leading figure in Veneto’s tanning sector and founder of Gruppo Mastrotto, passed away at the age of 84.

Born in 1941, Bruno Mastrotto founded the company in the mid 1950s along with his brother Santo and their father Arciso. What started as a small family business in Arzignano went on to become one of the world’s top leather producers.

Today, Gruppo Mastrotto operates 11 sites in Italy and has production facilities in Brazil, Mexico, Tunisia and Indonesia, along with key hubs in North America and the United Kingdom. In 2024, the group expanded further by acquiring Portuguese automotive components maker Coindu.

Beyond business, Bruno was deeply involved in social causes. He served as president of the Tanning Section of Confindustria Vicenza from 1987 to 1991.

Together with his wife, Silvana Marchesini, he founded the Karibuni Association to support children of immigrant families and later established the Silvana and Bruno Mastrotto Foundation.

The foundation focuses on educational and social projects, including initiatives like the Parkinson Café and La Tribù del Sole, and supports scientific research at the University of Padua.

In recognition of his lifelong contributions, Pope John Paul II awarded Bruno Mastrotto the title of Knight Commander of the Order of St. Sylvester in 2001 one of the highest papal honors.

“With deep sorrow, Gruppo Mastrotto announces the death of its Founder, Bruno Mastrotto.
A man of vision, courage and values, he dedicated his life to building a company that, starting from Arzignano, was able to establish itself in the world thanks to work, tenacity and the strength of his ideas. His example will continue to inspire our daily commitment and guide the Group’s path into the future. The whole community of Gruppo Mastrotto hugs the family with affection in this moment of great pain.”
