IIT Indore Develops Groundbreaking Smart Shoes for Indian Soldiers

In a recent development set to enhance the safety and efficiency of armed forces personnel, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore has designed cutting-edge shoes equipped with innovative technology.

These smart shoes can generate electricity and provide real-time location tracking, according to officials on Tuesday. The first batch of 10 pairs has already been delivered to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

The shoes’ advanced features will significantly boost the safety, coordination, and efficiency of Army personnel. The shoes were developed under the guidance of Professor I A Palani and incorporate Tribo-Electric Nanogenerator (TENG) technology. This technology allows the shoes to generate electricity with every step taken by the wearer.

The TENG technology enables the shoes to harness kinetic energy from walking, converting it into electricity. This electricity is then stored in a device embedded in the soles, which can be used to power small appliances. This feature is particularly useful for soldiers who may need to charge devices in remote locations.

In addition to electricity generation, the shoes are equipped with global positioning system (GPS) and radio frequency identification (RFID) technologies. These features provide real-time location tracking of personnel, enhancing operational coordination and safety. The ability to monitor the exact location of soldiers can be critical in both training and combat situations.

The potential applications of TENG technology extend beyond the military. Officials highlighted that these smart shoes could also be used to track the location of senior citizens with Alzheimer’s, monitor school children, and aid climbers in remote areas.

In industrial settings, the shoes could help monitor the attendance and work of factory workers. Additionally, they could be used to accurately analyze the movements of athletes, potentially improving their performance through detailed movement data.

In conclusion, the development of these smart shoes by IIT Indore represents a significant leap in technology that could revolutionize various fields. By enhancing the safety and efficiency of soldiers, providing real-time tracking, and generating electricity, these shoes showcase the innovative potential of TENG technology. The collaboration between IIT Indore and DRDO underscores the importance of integrating advanced research into practical applications for the benefit of society.
