The leather industry has recently witnessed a significant push for change, with major global associations coming together to support the Joint Statement on Durability in the Apparel & Footwear PEFCR.
This initiative is backed by the International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies (IULTCS), the International Council for Hides, Skins and Leather Trade Associations (ICHSLTA), and the German National Association for Hides & Leather (WHL).
Their endorsement brings unparalleled expertise and credibility to this campaign, calling for fair and accurate sustainability metrics for leather products in the fashion industry.
The Joint Statement stands as a call for fairer evaluation of leather’s durability and its long-lasting benefits for the fashion industry. By providing empirical evidence, the signatories aim to protect leather’s position in the marketplace and its potential contribution to a more sustainable and circular economy.
The global leather industry is constantly evolving, especially when it comes to its environmental impact.
While many natural materials are being scrutinized for their sustainability, the leather sector has faced challenges in being properly recognized for its durability and longevity. This is especially crucial as the fashion industry shifts towards more sustainable practices.
The IULTCS, which represents the scientific community of the leather industry, was quick to lend its full support to the Joint Statement. According to Joan Carles Castell, President of IULTCS, the organization believes it is essential to speak out against inaccurate metrics that could undermine the positive environmental contribution of leather.
Castell emphasized that science-backed durability metrics are vital in ensuring leather is recognized for its role in fostering sustainability in the fashion world.
In addition to the IULTCS, the ICHSLTA and WHL have also thrown their weight behind the initiative. Toni Baltes, President of ICHSLTA and WHL, noted that it is crucial for the longevity and sustainability of natural materials, such as leather, to be acknowledged in environmental assessments.
He stressed that proper recognition of leather’s benefits will contribute to a greener fashion industry.
The Joint Statement, which now has the endorsement of these prestigious associations, calls for a fair representation of natural fibers in environmental footprints. Gustavo Gonzalez-Quijano, Secretary General of COTANCE, expressed his pride in having these influential bodies onboard.
He believes their support strengthens the campaign and underscores the unity within the leather industry. Gonzalez-Quijano added that each new signatory boosts the statement’s chances of achieving a fair and balanced outcome.
This initiative is not only about defending leather’s reputation but also about promoting sustainable practices in the fashion industry. By advocating for the accurate portrayal of leather’s durability, these organizations hope to drive more brands toward circular and eco-friendly production models.
