JBS Couros Launches Savetan Technology to Reduce Waste and Cut Water Use by 16 Liters Per Hide

JBS Couros has introduced a new tanning model called Savetan across its facilities. The proprietary technology reduces water use, chemical inputs and environmental impact without compromising the quality of the final material.

The Savetan model, developed by the Kind Leather brand, is applied during the tanning stage of leather processing. It improves the deep fixation of chromium.

JBS Couros shared with Leathernews.org that the preliminary operational results at scale show strong efficiency gains. The process saves up to 16 liters of water per hide and reduces chemical inputs by 15%.

“Savetan truly changes the way we approach tanning. It makes the process simpler, more efficient & far more controlled, which directly reflects on leather quality. At the same time, we are able to reduce the use of traditional inputs & environmental impact without compromising performance. In the end, it is not just a new technology, it is a practical evolution of our process and of how the industry can move forward more responsibly.”

– Ramon Torres, Director of Research and Development (R&D), JBS Couros

The company has already implemented the technology in its 3 units and aims to have 100% of its tanning units operating under the Savetan model by the end of 2026.

The new method also reduces waste generation significantly. It cuts both Class I sludge, which is classified as hazardous due to toxicity and environmental risk and also residual chromium in the tanning bath by 65%.

Energy efficiency is another key outcome. The process reduces thermal energy use by 52% and lowers salt application by 42%.

The adoption of Savetan directly supports the company’s ESG strategy and sustainability goals.

“This is a fundamental innovation for the future of the sector. The implementation of Savetan materializes our commitment to leading the transformation of the leather value chain. By integrating operational efficiency with the preservation of vital resources, we deliver to the market a product that respects the planet’s limits and meets the growing global demand for transparency & socio-environmental responsibility.”

– Kim Sena, Sustainability Director, JBS Couros
