R. Kumar, Chairman and Managing Director of Arkay Leathers Private Ltd, has emphasized the urgent need for policy reforms to protect and grow India’s leather industry.
In a LinkedIn post, Kumar shared his views while referencing global trade issues, such as the rising tariff concerns in the U.S., that could present both challenges and opportunities for Indian manufacturers.
Kumar proposed three key reforms to strengthen India’s position:
- Scrapping import duties on raw materials for both exporters and domestic manufacturers.
- Allowing free export of wet blues and crust leather to tap into global demand.
- Simplify port procedures such as eliminating time-consuming inspections, to enhance efficiency.
Kumar’s recommendations come at a time when global trade policies, like the proposed tariffs in the U.S., published by Footwearnews are creating disruptions in key markets.
He urged stakeholders and organizations like CLE, IFLMEA, and ISF to work together to ensure India capitalizes on these shifts and emerges stronger in the global leather and footwear supply chain.
“It’s time for India to go on the offensive,” Kumar stated, highlighting the need for decisive action to safeguard the future of the industry.
