LATAM Airlines To Use Recycled Leather to Cover Nearly 7000 Aircraft Seats

LATAM Airlines has announced its sustainability initiative to modernize its fleet in South America by incorporating recycled leather into the seats of 24 aircraft according to aeroflap.com.br.

This eco-friendly move, part of the airline’s broader commitment to sustainability, will cover a total of 6,910 seats and contribute to a greener aviation industry.

The new seat upholstery is crafted from high-quality recycled leather made from discarded leather scraps. Unlike traditional leather production, which requires significant natural resources, this innovative material reduces carbon emissions by up to 60% and lowers water consumption by 55%.

These savings stem from eliminating the need for livestock farming, which uses vast amounts of land and water. The manufacturer, Gen Phoenix, reports that 95% of the water used in the recycling process is repurposed.

“This change allows us to continue positioning LATAM as a relevant player in the industry in terms of sustainability. It not only enhances the passenger experience but also aligns with our goal of becoming a zero waste to landfill group by 2027.”

Johanna Cabrera, LATAM Airlines’ Sustainability Manager,

Since partnering with Gen Phoenix in 2018, LATAM has used 130 square meters of recycled material, covering 61% of its fleet’s seats and preventing 21 tons of waste from reaching landfills.
