Nigeria Pushes Closer Ties to Grow Livestock and Leather Sector

A top government delegation visited key livestock and leather institutions in Zaria, Nigeria to push stronger cooperation and faster growth in the sector.

The visit was led by the Minister of Livestock Development Alhaji Mukhtar Idi Maiha. He was joined by the Special Adviser to the President on Livestock Development Professor Attahiru Jega.

The team was received by the Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam.

The delegation was first welcomed at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria by the Vice Chancellor Professor Adamu Ahmed before moving to the National Animal Production Research Institute in Shika.

At NAPRI the team commissioned facilities and equipment provided under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support project. They toured animal units and feed systems to see how the project is improving livestock output.

The delegation later visited NILEST where they inspected the tannery and other departments focused on leather processing and value addition.

During the visit leaders from the ministry and NILEST spoke on the need for institutions to work together to build a stronger livestock and leather industry.

Dr. Imam said NILEST is ready to support the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda by improving productivity resilience and industrial growth.

The visit shows the government’s clear push to reposition livestock and leather as serious drivers of Nigeria’s economy.
