Palestinian Ministry of Industry Signs Deal with UNIDO to Revive Leather and Footwear Sector Backed by Italy

Palestine’s leather and footwear industry is getting a major boost thanks to a new partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The deal, supported by funding from the Italian government, aims to bring the once-thriving sector in Hebron back to life.

The agreement was signed during the 53rd Industrial Development Board meeting of UNIDO. Key leaders present at the event included Palestine’s Industry Minister Arafat Asfour and UNIDO Director-General Gerd Müller, along with Italy’s UN representative Debora Lepre and Palestinian Ambassador to Austria Salah Abdel-Shafi.

The project is called “Developing a Sustainable Energy Footwear Village in Hebron.” It will focus on building a modern, low-carbon industrial hub powered by clean energy.

The plan also includes updated infrastructure to help make the industry more competitive and environmentally friendly.

Part of the new hub will be a shared services center for small and medium businesses. This center will provide support in design, technical training, and innovation.

It will also encourage recycling, reuse of materials, and help businesses reach international markets.

Another important part of the deal is a joint declaration that lays out long-term cooperation between Palestine and UNIDO.

The focus will be on areas like industrial policy, building value chains, circular economy practices, and sustainable energy solutions.
