Pangea Shares 2024 Sustainability Report with Notable ESG Progress

Pangea, a well-known global supplier of premium automotive leather, has shared its 2024 Sustainability Report. This marks the fourth year the company has been reporting its progress on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals.

The report highlights the company’s steady improvements in sustainable leather manufacturing, while also showing a clear commitment to transparency and innovation.

According to the report, Pangea has cut its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 12.5% compared to 2021 levels, largely thanks to new solar energy projects.

The company has also made a big shift towards greener chemical use, with 20.4% of its inputs now coming from bio-based sources instead of petroleum-based ones.

Water conservation efforts have been another win for Pangea, reducing water use by 8% to 14% in its retanning and finishing operations.

The León, Mexico facility has fully diverted leather shavings, contributing to a 68% global waste diversion rate. These changes not only help the environment but also show how sustainable practices can be put into action.

Pangea continues to maintain top industry certifications like Leather Working Group (LWG) Gold status and a high NQC rating, which is above average for both the leather and automotive supply sectors.

In addition, the company added OEKO-TEX certifications for its products, meeting some of the highest safety standards.

“As automotive customers seek to decarbonize their supply chains, our work in traceability, energy efficiency, and responsible chemistry proves that leather can and should be part of a sustainable solution”

Roger Pinto, Global Director of Sustainability & Innovation, Pangea

The report also highlights Pangea’s efforts to change the story around leather’s carbon footprint. The company’s updated life cycle assessments show that leather has a lower impact than previously believed, and it’s important to use hides as a byproduct of the beef industry to cut down on waste.

Looking ahead, Pangea plans to continue focusing on material traceability, renewable inputs, circular economy practices, and social responsibility.

The company aims to earn top ESG ratings and work more closely with customers to promote leather as a durable, eco-friendly, and ethically sourced material for the automotive industry.
