Three Tannery Workers Collapse After Inhaling Toxic Gas at a Tannery in Vaniyambadi

Three workers at a private tannery in Vaniyambadi, Tamil Nadu were hospitalized on 27 February 2026, Friday morning after collapsing from toxic gas.

The workers, identified as B. Perumal, 55, S. Munir, 52, and K. Nagaraj, 58, all residents of Vaniyambadi town and the incident was reported to be occurred around 9 a.m on 27 February 2026.

According to local sources, the trio had loaded the leather into the drum the previous day alongside coworkers. When they returned Friday morning and opened the chamber, the gas that had built up overnight proved immediately overwhelming.

Tannery owner Mohammed Iqbal, 58, was alerted by other staff and rushed to the scene. The three workers were transported to Government Taluk Hospital in Vaniyambadi, where doctors reported they were recovering.

Vaniyambadi Town police registered a case under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which covers culpable homicide not amounting to murder, as well as provisions of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013. An investigation is ongoing.
