Indian leather industry, a vital economic sector and symbol of skilled craftsmanship, was honored at the National Export Excellence Awards 2023-24 on December 18, 2024. Union Minister Piyush Goyal praised exporters for their dedication and contribution to making India a global leader in leather products.
The sector, contributing USD 5 billion annually in exports, is a major employer, especially for economically weaker sections and women. Organized by the Council for Leather Exports (CLE), the awards highlighted excellence across various categories.

Speaking at the event, Goyal applauded exporters for their remarkable contributions and encouraged industry leaders to collaborate for even greater achievements.
He commended the leather sector for upholding high-quality standards and its dedication to making Brand India synonymous with excellence. Goyal emphasized that enhancing quality consciousness is essential for boosting global competitiveness.
The Minister urged the industry to expand production while integrating sustainable practices. He highlighted the importance of achieving zero pollution through proper treatment facilities. “India’s growing demand and economies of scale can position the country as a global leader,” he noted, adding that large-scale production would further strengthen India’s competitiveness.
