Two workers lost their lives on Saturday morning, 24 January 2026, after inhaling poisonous gas inside a private tannery in Pernambut, Vellore district.
The victims were identified as Sheikh Ali, 60 and Jamal Basha, 41. Both were residents of Pernambut and long time workers at the tannery.
According to The New Indian Express the incident took place around 8.30 am at PAB Leather Company located in Bakkalapalli village.
Police said the two men inhaled the gas, collapsed on the spot and lost consciousness.
Other workers who arrived later found them lying unconscious inside the unit. They were rushed to a hospital in Umarabad, Tirupattur, where doctors declared both dead.
The bodies were later moved to Pernambut Government Hospital where postmortem was conducted.
Pernambut police have registered a case of unnatural death under Section 194 of BNSS and started an investigation. As of now no action has been taken against the company.
Atheeq Ur Rahman councillor of Ward 1 raised serious concerns about safety violations at the unit.
He also alleged that factory inspections are not done properly and accused officials of signing papers without real checks.
