Bangladesh Rawhide Traders Demand Cold Storage Facilities to Preserve Animal Hides

Rawhide & skin traders and tannery owners have raised a crucial call to action, urging the Government of Bangladesh to establish cold storage facilities in Natore, Chattogram, Dhaka, and other local markets. This move, they argue, is essential for properly preserving sacrificial animal hides and preventing significant wastage.

The need for modern cold storage facilities has become increasingly apparent, especially during peak seasons when sacrificial animal hides are abundant. By upgrading unused storage facilities across various regions, the country could save a substantial amount of hides from rotting each year, thus ensuring better resource utilization and economic gain.

At a recent meeting of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) held in Motijheel, the organization’s Senior Vice President Md Amin Helaly emphasized the importance of bolstering the hide preservation infrastructure. “The government should strengthen the storage system in each district to preserve rawhide,” he stated, highlighting the potential for private sector involvement if necessary.

Helaly also stressed the importance of 100% compliance within the leather industry to enhance overall efficiency and quality.

During the open discussion segment of the meeting, several proposals were put forward by the standing committee members.

These proposals aim to address various challenges faced by the leather and leather goods industry and include:

  • Easy financing arrangements for entrepreneurs in the leather sector.
  • Creation of a skilled and trained workforce, including designers.
  • Ensuring adequate training and use of modern technology.
  • Establishment of a footwear industrial park.
  • Development of modern slaughterhouses.
  • Improvement of knives and machinery used in the industry and training of butchers.
  • Establishment of a common display centre for leather and leather goods.
  • Introduction of short diploma courses and higher education in leather technology.
  • Payment of outstanding dues to hide and skin traders.
  • Effective measures to obtain environmental clearance for the Savar Leather Industrial City.
  • Ensuring representation of all stakeholders in the National Committee on Leather Industry Management Act.

In conclusion, the call for modern cold storage facilities by rawhide traders and tannery owners highlights a significant opportunity to enhance the preservation of sacrificial animal hides. By implementing the proposals discussed at the FBCCI meeting, the leather industry in Bangladesh could see substantial improvements in efficiency, quality, and economic benefits. The involvement of both the government and private sector will be crucial in realizing these goals and ensuring the industry’s sustainable growth.
