The Kenanie Leather Tannery in Machakos County is set to uplift pastoral communities by providing a stable market for hides and skins. This project, part of Kenya’s industrialization agenda, will create jobs and drive economic growth.

Deputy Chief of Staff Eliud Owalo, alongside key officials, assured the government’s dedication to completing the tannery. The 500-hectare leather industrial park in Athi River aims to increase Kenya’s leather exports by focusing on value addition.

Pastoralists will now earn more as raw materials are processed into finished leather goods like shoes and bags. The leather industry, currently worth Ksh10 billion annually, has the potential to grow tenfold through local manufacturing.

A water and effluent treatment plant will ensure sustainable water supply and environmental safety. The Machakos Water Supply Project will further support industries and local communities with improved water access.
