Freiberg Leather Days Brings Together Global Industry Leaders

Freiberg recently hosted the 13th Freiberg Leather Days on May 21 and 22, 2025 bringing together 180 participants from 15 countries. Industry experts, including tanneries, chemical suppliers, machine builders, and associations, gathered in the city to discuss key issues surrounding leather.

The event was filled with discussions on innovation, sustainability, and technology. The leather industry, once known for its old-school methods, has now evolved into a high-tech sector with strict environmental standards.

One major focus at the event was the use of bio-based materials for more sustainable leather production. Participants explored how these alternatives can reduce the environmental impact of leather manufacturing.

Another hot topic was the role of artificial intelligence in mechanical engineering. Experts discussed how AI can boost efficiency and bring new ways to produce high-quality leather goods.

The event also tackled the ongoing debate between leather and vegan materials. Speakers examined the relevance of leather in today’s fashion and design markets, highlighting its durability and unique qualities that many vegan alternatives cannot match.

Environmental and legal challenges were also a big part of the conversation. From changing regulations to stricter pollutant limits, experts shared their thoughts on how the industry can stay ahead of these challenges.

The opening lecture by Prof. Dr. Peter Heck from Hochschule Trier’s Institute for Applied Material Flow Management focused on the role of farm animals in regional material flow. His talk sparked lively debates and deep discussions among participants.

The two-day event was filled with inspiring presentations, insightful conversations, and a strong sense of community. Many attendees left with new ideas and valuable connections, ready to tackle the future of the leather industry.

The next Freiberg Leather Days will be held on July 1 and 2, 2026, in Münster.
