CLRI Presents Modjo Leather City Plan at Ethiopian Prime Minister's Manufacturing Council

The Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) of India is making steady progress in supporting Ethiopia’s plan to build Modjo Leather City.

After presenting the feasibility study to Ethiopia’s Ministry of Industry on 27 June 2025, the CLRI team took the next major step.

On 9 July 2025, Dr P Saravanan and Dr B Madhan from CLRI presented the full project report during a high-level meeting at the Prime Minister’s Manufacturing Council.

The meeting was chaired by His Excellency Mr Girma Biru and attended by senior government officials. At this meeting, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) formally submitted CLRI’s detailed feasibility study to His Excellency Melaku Alebel, Ethiopia’s Senior Minister of Industry.

Later that day, the CLRI team also presented the project to Mr Shimeles Abdissa, the President of the Oromia Region. This is where the Modjo Leather City is planned to be built.

These meetings are considered critical steps in building long-term leather industry infrastructure in Ethiopia. They also show how countries in the Global South can work together to support industrial development.
