Hermès Opens New Leather Goods Workshop in France to Boost Local Jobs

Hermès is expanding its presence in France with another new leather goods workshop in L’Isle-d’Espagnac. The site will employ 260 skilled artisans trained in Hermès’ renowned leatherworking techniques.

This marks the 4th workshop in the South-West hub and strengthens the brand’s commitment to sustainable, locally made luxury goods.

The new workshop will produce iconic Kelly and Birkin bags along with smaller leather items. It joins existing sites in Nontron, Saint-Junien, and Montbron.

By keeping production in France, Hermès is creating long-term jobs and supporting regional economic growth.

Training for new artisans happens at the École Hermès des savoir-faire, which offers CAP vocational diplomas in leatherworking and CQP certificates in cutting and stitching. In 2024, 100% of apprentices earned their CAP diplomas.

The L’Isle-d’Espagnac workshop combines modern design with environmental responsibility. Built on a former airfield, the 5,800 square metre facility uses local materials like Charente stone, poplar and red cedar.

Large windows maximize natural light and warmth. The building features a planted roof, 1,800 square metres of solar panels and a highly efficient geothermal system.
