Automotive leather maker Pangea is turning leftover hides into opportunity by donating 600 hides to Pingree Detroit. The Michigan-based company transforms reclaimed leather into premium goods while creating jobs for U.S. veterans and local residents.
This marks the largest donation Pingree has received this year. The 600 hides are expected to become over 3,500 leather items including wallets, tote bags, sneakers and coasters.
Beyond producing handmade goods, the initiative creates new jobs and reduces waste going to landfills goals both companies prioritize.
“Pingree Detroit is doing truly meaningful work”
– Bob Tuuk, Vice President of Global Purchasing, Pangea
He added that the mission of giving discarded materials new life aligns with Pangea’s focus on sustainable leather manufacturing.
Founded in 2015, Pingree Detroit aims to blend craftsmanship, sustainability and social impact. Each product includes a “Maker Card” with a quote from the veteran or Detroiter who crafted it.
“This donation of 600+ hides is more than material it’s an investment in people. It means jobs for Veterans and Detroiters and another step toward a future where our work benefits the community.”
– Jarret Schlaff, Co-founder and CEO, Pingree Detroit
The donation also supports Pangea’s sustainability goals. In 2024 the company diverted 68% of leather shavings from landfills, repurposing them for local industries and sending some for processing in Italy.
For both Pangea and Pingree Detroit the collaboration reduces waste, creates jobs and delivers high-quality leather goods made in Detroit.
