Indian Exporters Meet Prime Minister Modi Seek Urgent Relief from US Tariffs

Indian exporters have called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to step in after the United States imposed a steep 50% tariff on Indian goods, a move that has shaken several labor-intensive industries including leather, footwear, textiles and handicrafts.

According to Bloomberg and Business of Fashion, during a meeting held on Monday 3rd November 2025, exporters urged the government to provide immediate relief measures such as a pause on loan repayments and lower interest rates to help businesses cope with the impact.

The meeting was attended by top officials including the finance and commerce ministers, according to people familiar with the discussions. While no assurances were made, officials hinted that the demands are being seriously considered.

India’s Prime Minister’s Office, along with the commerce and finance ministries, have not issued any formal statement on the matter.

Official data shows exports to the US dropped by nearly 12% in September compared to a year earlier.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently stated that India would not be pressured into signing any trade agreement with Washington, despite ongoing talks suggesting progress.

This mixed messaging has left exporters uncertain about the government’s next steps.

As India weighs its options, exporters are anxiously waiting for clarity and support to prevent further damage to sectors that employ millions and drive the country’s export economy.
