The leather industry in the province of Vicenza, Italy has taken a bold step. La Sezione Concia di Confindustria Vicenza has officially dropped the word Concia (Tanning) and will now be known as Pelle e Cuoio. The decision was approved with a unanimous vote on 10 November 2025 and marks a major shift in how the sector wants to present itself to the world.
The new name aims to better communicate how much the industry has evolved. Instead of focusing on the tanning process alone the sector wants people to understand the technology, sustainability and innovation behind modern leather production.
The shift from Concia to Pelle e Cuoio also changes the message. Concia points to a process while Pelle e Cuoio highlights the material itself which comes from a food industry byproduct.
Through advanced and greener technologies this byproduct becomes a durable natural material with a long life. It also carries the sensory appeal that leather is known for including its touch, look and strong link to circularity.
For Vicenza’s leather district this is more than a name change. It is a cultural reset. Local manufacturers have spent years investing in cleaner systems, better waste management and stronger traceability.
The new identity gives them a clearer way to show their craftsmanship and commitment to low impact production that saves water and energy.
“Our Section decided to change its name to overcome the distorted image that poor storytelling and limited recognition of our pioneering work have built over time”
– Mirko Balsemin, President
At a time when buyers care about circular materials and brands demand transparency the sector believes this rebranding will open new conversations.
Pelle e Cuoio celebrates a material that is natural, biodegradable and renewable shaped by centuries of skill and now powered by sustainable innovation.
In short this new chapter gives the industry a sharper voice as it pushes toward a greener future.
