Punjab Govt Signs MOU to Boost Jalandhar Sports and Leather Industry

The Punjab government has signed a fresh agreement to strengthen Jalandhar’s sports goods and leather industry and push it to compete globally.

On Monday 5th January 2026, the state government signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with MSME Technology Development Centre (PPDC) Meerut to open a technology extension centre in Jalandhar.

The centre will focus on research development, testing, training and skill building for sports goods and leather manufacturers in the city.

“Due to strenuous efforts of the state government this centre will be opened here to give a fillip to the sports industry by ensuring strong research and development”

Sanjiv Arora, Industry Minister Punjab Government

The agreement was signed between PPDC Meerut and the Government Institute of Leather and Footwear Technology GILFT Jalandhar. Senior officials from both institutions formalised the deal.

The proposed extension centre will be set up at an estimated cost of Rs 10 crore (~$1.1 Million). It will offer modern facilities to help local manufacturers meet changing global standards.

NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Bery urged manufacturers to invest more in quality and innovation. He said long term focus in these areas is key to building strong global brands.

Manufacturers highlighted that Jalandhar made products are already being used at major global events including the Olympics and the Women’s Rugby World Cup.

An exhibition displaying sports goods safety gear and related equipment made in Jalandhar was also organised during the visit.
