Ecco Leather has decided to permanently close its tannery in Dongen, Netherlands, after a major fire damaged the facility in May 2025. The Danish leather company will now move its tanning operations to Asia as part of a long term strategy shift reports La Conceria
The fire broke out during the night of May 4 to May 5, 2025, hitting the 14,000 square metre facility in Dongen. The site employed around 200 people. Early reports said the plant was completely destroyed, but later updates revealed that the leather finishing unit remained intact, raising hopes of a restart.
In the months that followed, reports suggested Ecco Leather was considering shutting the Dutch tannery and consolidating production in Asia. The company did not confirm this at first and said in October 2025 that it was still reviewing the future of the site.
Now the company has completed its review and taken a final call.
“The fire incident was a key moment to rethink how to build a stronger and more sustainable leather business in the future. As a result, operations in Dongen will cease. Ecco Leather will continue to develop and supply high quality leather to Ecco and other customers from our tanneries in Asia.”
