The Sindicato Obrero de la Industria del Cuero (SOIC), a leather industry workers union in Argentina, is facing a financial crisis with a debt of over 80 million Argentinian pesos (~USD57,000). The issue surfaced after a leadership change in 2025, and new findings in early 2026 raised serious concerns, reports esperancino.com.ar
The year 2025 did not go as expected for the union. Many members believe there was poor management, though supporters of the previous leadership deny this. Reports suggest that no major progress was made, and many people within the union have avoided speaking openly about the situation.
By January 2026, complaints from members pushed the new leadership to start reviewing the union’s financial records. This is when details of the debt began to come out.
The union reportedly failed to pay several taxes to the Agencia de Recaudación y Control Aduanero is a Customs Collection and Control Agency in Argentina. There are no active payment plans and interest has added to the original dues.
There are also unpaid bills for services and supplies, including electricity. These additional liabilities have pushed the total debt beyond 110 million pesos (~USD79,000).
Lawyers are now reviewing documents to decide the next steps. The new leadership is trying to control expenses and reduce the debt. At the same time, they are considering legal action against former officials over possible financial irregularities.
