The French leather industry posted a €4.9 billion trade surplus in 2025, with exports reaching €18.6 billion despite a global slowdown in trade. France also held its position as the world’s 4th largest leather exporter with a 6.1% global share in 2025. The French leather industry association, Alliance France Cuir, released the data through its Economic Observatory.
The French leather industry, part of the global leather and luxury goods sector, recorded €18.6 billion in exports in 2025, down 3% compared to 2024, while imports remained stable at €13.7 billion in 2025.
France maintained its position as the world’s 4th largest leather exporter with a 6.1% share of the global market. Leather goods remained the top export segment, generating €12.5 billion and accounting for 67% of total international sales.
Exports continue to stay at historically high levels despite the slight decline. The sector has seen strong long-term growth, with exports doubling since 2015 and increasing 41% since 2019 according to Alliance France Cuir.
The current dip reflects a normalisation after a period of growth in global markets rather than a structural weakness in the industry.
“Despite a complex international environment, the French leather industry is demonstrating its ability to adapt and its resilience. Moving upmarket, diversifying supply sources and transforming distribution channels are key drivers for maintaining French competitiveness. These developments reflect the profound restructuring of international markets.”
