The Haryana State Pollution Control Board has issued a show cause notice to a leather manufacturing unit in Bahadurgarh over multiple environmental violations warning that it could face closure and other legal action. The action follows an inspection by a joint committee formed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), according to The Tribune.
The inspection found that the unit’s effluent treatment plant (ETP) was not functioning properly. Effluent discharged through a bypass arrangement was collected and sent to the board’s laboratory for analysis.
Other violations included the absence of mandatory authorisation for hazardous waste disposal, including used oil and the failure to maintain records of the ETP’s operation. The inspection also found that the factory lacked a hazardous waste display board and the prescribed inlet flow meter for the treatment plant.
The committee further flagged the lack of permission for groundwater extraction and missing environmental safeguards including a chrome recovery plant, rainwater harvesting system, adequate green belt, ambient air monitoring station and solar evaporation pond or electric evaporator.
The board has given the unit 15 days from receipt of the notice to explain why closure directions and restrictions on electricity, water and other services should not be imposed.
