Bangladesh’s Trade and Industry Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir visited a leather industrial zone and a leather processing factory in Turkey to explore technologies and infrastructure that could help modernise the country’s leather industry.

During visits on November 4 and 5, the minister visited the Istanbul Leather Organised Industrial Zone (IDOSB) in Tuzla where discussions focused on shared infrastructure and centralised wastewater treatment facilities.

He also visited Cevahir Leather Industry and Trade Company Ltd where he observed leather production from raw hides to finished products, including tanning, processing and finishing technologies.

The minister also inspected 2 waste to energy facilities. The plant operated by ISTAC in Istanbul can process 3,000 tonnes of waste daily and generate 85 MW of electricity.

On November 5 he visited the Energram Thermal Disposal Facility in Sile which treats 33,000 tonnes of industrial waste annually and has an electricity generation capacity of 5.6 MW.

The visits aimed to explore opportunities for Bangladesh to adopt Turkish expertise in leather manufacturing, wastewater treatment and industrial waste management through technology transfer, training and investment partnerships.
