A sudden fire in the spray department of a Jajmau tannery on Sunday 7th December 2025 burned leather worth about Rs 1.5 lakh (~USD 1600).

The blaze was believed to have started due to a short circuit while workers were on duty.

A local said the fire started on the first floor where the spray section is located. He said workers saw smoke rising then flames quickly spread through stacked leather. In a few minutes the entire stock was lost.

Fire crews reached the spot after police were alerted. Three fire engines were deployed along with a submersible pump inside the tannery. The team managed to control the flames before they could spread to other sections.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about electrical safety in old tannery buildings across Jajmau where many units still operate with outdated wiring.
