Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has reaffirmed his administration’s strong commitment to revitalizing the leather industry as a strategic move to boost the state’s economy. This pledge was made during a courtesy visit by Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam, Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Leather Science and Technology (NILEST), at the Government House in Maiduguri.
Governor Zulum stressed the critical role the leather sector can play in driving economic growth, not just for Borno State but for Nigeria as a whole. He highlighted ongoing efforts to revive the long-abandoned Neitel Shoes Company, which has been inactive for over 20 years.
According to the governor, sustained political will and proactive measures can transform the leather industry into a major contributor to the state’s economy.
In a significant development, Governor Zulum praised the upgrade of the Maiduguri Extension Centre of NILEST to a Regional Centre, a move expected to improve the coordination of leather-related activities across six states in the Northeast region.
This upgrade positions Borno as a central hub for leather industry development in the region.
“We will give you the desired support to promote the sector. With the degree of seriousness, we can achieve success. However, where there is corruption, progress will be difficult,”
Governor Zulum
He pledged close collaboration between Borno State and NILEST to ensure sustainable growth in the leather industry.
To translate this vision into action, Governor Zulum directed Mr. Tarpaya Asarya, Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, to partner with NILEST to create job opportunities for unemployed youths, promote capacity building, and unlock additional benefits linked to the industry’s expansion.
This initiative aims to equip young people with skills in leather technology, footwear design, and innovation.
Taking immediate steps, Governor Zulum ordered the deployment of 60 Borno State indigenes to NILEST in Zaria for intensive training in leather production and design. This move is expected to build a skilled workforce that can drive the state’s leather industry forward.
As the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Leather Policy, Governor Zulum also expressed his dedication to thoroughly reviewing the existing policy document to explore further opportunities for growth and partnerships within the sector.
Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam, Director General of NILEST commended Governor Zulum’s commitment to advancing the leather industry and ensuring productivity in leather products. This collaboration is expected to attract more investments and foster innovation in the sector.
