The International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies (IULTCS) has long been at the forefront of leather science, promoting innovation and knowledge sharing across its global network.
One of the most significant ways the organization encourages research is through the Young Leather Scientist Grants (YLSG), designed to recognize and support emerging talent in leather science and technology.
These grants are not only an incentive for young scientists to explore new avenues but also provide a direct contribution to the advancement of the leather industry.
Launched to encourage younger scientists to delve deeper into leather research, the grants are divided into three distinct categories, each sponsored by leading industry players.
The winners of these prestigious awards are not only given the financial means to further their research but also have the option to present their findings at an IULTCS Congress.
This initiative underscores IULTCS’s commitment to nurturing future leaders in leather science, and the 2025 edition promises to be another milestone in the organization’s history.
Categories of Awards
The YLSG offers awards in three major research areas, recognizing outstanding achievements in basic leather research, environmental sustainability, and machinery innovation.
Basic Leather Research Grant – Sponsored by TYSON Leather (1500 €)
This category is aimed at basic research in collagen and leather, analytical method development, innovative processing techniques, or the preservation of hides and skins.
It also covers studies on tannery waste treatment and environmental studies related to tanneries.
Professor Mike Redwood Sustainability/Environmental Grant – Sponsored by Leather Naturally (1000 €)
This category focuses on innovative environmental techniques such as wastewater treatment and emissions management.
It also encourages research on sustainability in leather processing, particularly regarding chemicals that reduce the environmental impact, such as improving the carbon footprint or water management.
Leather Machinery/Equipment Grant – Sponsored by Italprogetti (1000 €)
This grant promotes the development of new machinery or equipment for leather processing.
It supports research that enhances efficiency in leather production, such as energy-saving innovations or processes that simplify production.
Application Process and Requirements
Applicants for the Young Leather Scientist Grants must meet specific requirements to qualify.
They must be under 35 years of age at the time of submission, be a student or scientist at a university or leather school, and have an advisor at their institution.
Applicants must submit their project proposals in one PDF file, including an application form, a research project plan, curriculum vitae for both the applicant and advisor, and a letter of recommendation from the advisor.
The selection process for the grants is rigorous, with applications evaluated on the basis of the clarity of research aims, methodology, expected results, originality, and the global or local benefits of the research. The qualifications of both the researcher and advisor are also key criteria for selection.
