Paraguay Launches Socio-Environmental Traceability System RETSA PY to Boost Beef and Leather Exports

The government of Paraguay has launched RETSA PY, a new socio-environmental traceability system to strengthen its beef and leather export sectors. The initiative is led by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce and aims to improve access to global markets including the European Union.

RETSA PY, short for Registry of Establishments with Socio-Environmental Traceability, focuses on cattle production linked to meat and leather exports. It aims to provide verified data on production processes and environmental conditions.

Officials said the system will help exporters to access markets like Europe, meeting the European Union Regulation on deforestation free products, also known as EUDR, which will come into force on 31 December 2026.

The platform works as a digital system that registers production units and combines data from public institutions. It generates traceability certificates that confirm the origin of products and simplify verification for exporters and producers.

Authorities said RETSA PY builds on existing systems like the Animal Traceability System and the Paraguayan Animal Identification System. The National Animal Health and Quality Service has already identified over 4 million cattle, covering around 30% of the national herd.

The launch event saw participation from public bodies, private sector players and civil society groups. Discussions focused on improving market access and meeting global standards.

Industry bodies from the beef and leather sectors said the system could open new opportunities but may need more investment in technology and efficiency.
