Rino Mastrotto Launches HEARTH Leather with 91% Less Water and Chemical Usage

HEARTH made its official debut last week in Florence an exclusive first look at the latest innovation from Rino Mastrotto

The new leather, developed using a unique patented process, allows for a 91% reduction in water use and a 23% drop in chemical usage during key production stages retanning, dyeing, and fatliquoring.

The company says these gains are achieved without any compromise on the premium quality, look, or feel of the leather.

The product launch marks a major milestone in Rino Mastrotto’s journey toward more responsible manufacturing. HEARTH is designed to meet the demands of luxury brands looking to reduce their environmental impact while maintaining the high standards their customers expect.

To back its claims, the company commissioned a third-party Life Cycle Assessment study. Here are the findings:

  • 22% fewer carbon emissions
  • 25% less freshwater eutrophication
  • 25% lower use of fossil resources
  • 7% decrease in freshwater ecotoxicity

The comparative study followed ISO 14040 and 14044 standards and focused on the environmental footprint of producing one square meter of finished cowhide. Results showed that HEARTH saved nearly 38 liters of water per square meter compared to traditional methods.

The company says HEARTH sets a new benchmark for sustainable leather production and presents an opportunity for global fashion brands to show a deeper commitment to the planet without compromising on beauty, exclusivity, or performance.
