The French leather industry reported total exports worth €4.55 Billion in the first quarter of 2026 between January and March 2026, down 3.5% from €4.72 Billion recorded during the same period in 2025, according to Alliance France Cuir.

The figures cover the five major segments of the French leather industry, including Raw Hides and Skins, Leather, Footwear, Leather Goods and Gloves.

On the import side, the industry also recorded a decline during the first quarter of 2026.

Total imports stood at €3.12 Billion between January and March 2026, marking a 7.15% drop compared to €3.36 Billion in the corresponding period of 2025.

Exports to Asia remained broadly stable, although some key markets delivered encouraging results. Sales to China increased by 4%, while exports to Hong Kong jumped by 21% following a mixed performance in 2025.

In Europe, exports declined slightly by 2%. Exports to the United States recorded a sharp decline of 22%. This significant drop may be linked to slower consumer spending in the U.S., lower inventory levels among distributors and a more uncertain global economic environment, says Alliance France Cuir.

Exports to the United Arab Emirates also fell by 15%, mainly due to geopolitical tensions and the ongoing conflict in the region.

In upcoming articles, we will take a deeper look at each segment and break down the performance of Raw Hides and Skins, Leather, Footwear, Leather Goods and Gloves individually.
